The BBNA Forestry Program provides land management services to Native Allotment owners of Bristol Bay. The program coordinates with BIA, State and Federal Agencies, Tribal Councils and other organizations to preserve sustainable forest land.
BIA funding supports the base program thru compact agreements and provides a venue for additional funds thru competitive grant searches.
The program provides services in (but not limited to) Forest Inventory, aerial photo acquisition, field inventory, inventory reports, Fire Preparedness, coordinating between Native allotment owners and fire fighting agencies, fire investigation, hazard fuels reduction, Firewise community education, Forest Management and Development, forest health coordination, timber trespass, timber sale, forest management plan preparation, invasive plant studies and database/record management.
Successful grant projects (not part of regular program funding) have included 3 separate Firewise Community Education projects in 8 villages, Hazard Fuels Reduction projects in 3 villages, and completion of a feasibility study for biomass research.
For data management the forestry program utilizes database and GIS software to maintain aerial photography, USGS maps, Native Allotments shapefiles, other Federal and Native land holdings, and links with BBNA Realty for ownership information. A primary database is under development by BBNA Forestry to assist with organization and management of program information.
