Internship duties include working at the Portage Creek sonar site to collect escapement data on the Nushagak sockeye run and observing the management process in the Dillingham office. This position provides an opportunity for an intern to get a close-up look at the management of one of the most dynamic salmon fisheries in the world. The intern will be exposed to all aspects of the day to day management of the Nushagak District salmon fishery from escapement enumeration age composition collection to aerial surveys and fish-tickets.

Fish will be captured and marked with radio transmitters in the lower main stem Togiak River. The crew will establish and monitor fixed receiver stations located throughout the watershed to locate marked fish in the Togiak River. Knowledge gained from this project will allow us to estimate Chinook salmon escapement in future years for long-term monitoring and maximize subsistence opportunities while continuing to protect the health of the population. Employee functions under the direct supervision of a designated crew leader in the field. June 2 – Aug. 15 Courtenay Carty and Robbin LaVine 842-5257 $18 per hour The Kvichak Watershed Subsistence Salmon Fishery: An Ethnographic Study. This ethnographic study will investigate how families in four communities of the Kvichak District of the Bristol Bay Management Area (Iliamna, Newhalen, Nondalton, and Port Alsworth) develop subsistence fishing strategies in response to changing sociocultural, economic, and environmental circumstances. The three research questions are (1) how do families make decisions about subsistence fishing in light of ever-changing sociocultural, economic, and environmental circumstances; (2): what factors shape annual variations in subsistence harvests of Kvichak sockeye salmon, and (3) which of these factors shape long-term trends in the fishery. The project team consists of anthropologists from Alaska Department of Fish and Game, the National Park Service, and the Bristol Bay Native Association. The intern will assist in the preparation for and conduction of the second field season of ethnographic research in the communities of Nondalton, Port Alsworth, Iliamna, and Newhalen in Southwest Alaska. The intern will spend a large portion of their summer working on a preseason literature review and assisting staff at the ADF&G Division of Subsistence Office in Anchorage, Alaska. 5.Lake Clark NP Newhalen River Intern Newhalen River
June 9- August 15 Dan Young 781-2113 $15 per hour Newhalen River Counting Tower. Come count salmon in beautiful Lake Clark National Park and Preserve and gain valuable field experience. This internship will focus on monitoring sockeye salmon escapement into the Lake Clark drainage via the Newhalen River. Since 1996, sockeye salmon returns to the Kvichak River and Lake Clark watersheds have declined for unknown reasons. In 2000, escapement monitoring was established on the Newhalen River to provide a reliable estimate of escapement to Lake Clark. Continued monitoring of salmon escapement on the upper Newhalen River allows managers to assess the current returns relative to historic data. Internship duties will include counting and measuring salmon and resident fish species, living and working in a remote field camp, and will require an ability to operate small boats.

6-7.Fisheries Research Institute, Aleknagik & Porcupine IslandJun9
–Aug. 29 Chris Boatwright and Terry Rich 206-543-7628 $15 per hour The University of Washington’s Fisheries Research Institute (FRI) has been continuously conducting research on sockeye salmon and their ecosystems in Bristol Bay since 1946. Initial research was aimed at determining the carrying capacity of spawning and rearing environments for sockeye. To achieve this goal, basic techniques were devised for estimating number of salmon on spawning sites each year, determining the age of fish by examination of scales and otoliths, sampling to measure lake productivity and estimate densities of predators, competitors, prey, and parasites, estimating smolt abundance, sampling the salmon harvest, and monitoring environmental factors such as temperature and solar radiation. Over the course of nearly 60 years many projects have been completed and published, but much of the basic life history and environmental data listed above has been continuously collected due to its importance in monitoring the long term health and productivity of salmon populations. We are especially interested in learning how they respond to changes in environmental and biological factors such as climate change (e.g. global warming) and large scale fluctuations in abundance. Interns who are selected for these positions will participate in the following: • Adult salmon spawning densities via spawning ground surveys. • Growth and relative abundance of juvenile fishes within Bristol Bay Lakes via beach seining and tow-netting. • Age structure of salmon populations, via scale and otolith collection. • Lake productivity in terms of species composition and abundance of prey for juvenile salmonids. • Environmental data including lake and stream temperatures, lake level, and solar radiation. The Aleknagik Internship (1) will begin June 9 and will be based at the UW camp on the south shore of Lake Aleknagik. The intern will be responsible for providing field assistance to researchers on various salmon research projects. The Porcupine Island Internship (1) on Lake Iliamna is scheduled to begin June 16th -23rd with a preferable end date around September 1st. The intern will start work at the Aleknagik site until the Porcupine Island camp about 1-2 weeks before deploying. On-going project field work as described above should occupy work hours from 9:00 am-3:00 pm daily, while remainder hours will be spent on camp and trail maintenance. This is to be a smaller crew than at the Aleknagik Camp, and set in a very remote location. Cabin accommodations are provided including food and most gear.
